RE: 1997 Newmar Mountian Aire?

Spartan Chassis Cummins 325HP engine I got an e-mail back from the owner - he is the original owner... he has replaced the water heater, furnace, microwave... the front TV just died, but not replaced yet. I am curious about a few things - i read a while back that there were some problems with ball joints on the front suspension? The seller said fiberglass roof, and it did have a leak, but it was caulking at a seam that has been fixed. The asking price is just under $50,000 - which is lower than NADA low retail for this RV... I'm just wondering if there are other things to watch out for specifically on this make/model. Thank you!

Lookin for a family friendly place to go near Branson, MO

The title says the story... I have a 2.5 year old and a 4 month old set of boys and plan to rent a class A motorhome and wanted to find a nice CG near or around or in Branson, MO to go enjoy a week with the family. Can you help reccommend a CG? How about things that are a must see? Things to avoid? Thank you so much for your input!!

1997 Newmar Mountian Aire?

I found one locally to me at a very nice price. It's got the following: 66K miles Independent Front Suspension Diesel generator I have seen a few photo's - but with a 1997 - is there anything to look out for? The seller is the original owner. Thank you!!

RE: What will happen if gas is $7 per gallon by 2012?

Dave D - Interesting thought... Take nuke power and make fuel to go in vehicles... Could be batteries or other "fuels" like H2 or? The issue I see is a short term one - where the infrastructure needed to get the nuke online and the fueling system in place and the vehicles in place. We have a huge amount of work to do to get everything transferred over, unless they are able to synthesize gasoline and diesel. I have done a fair amount of research on Peak Oil, and while I don't deny it, I also think much of what's going on right now is a smokescreen for something else. what I'm trying to say is there is a lot of manipulation going on in the marketplace... I plan to capitalize on what's going on - make more so I can get on with my purpose in life. My Purpose in life! Cheers!

RE: Cost of gas last trip

I read this and have been thinking... I don't own a MH yet, but I'm just about to buy one. I'm looking for one that I can afford to pay for without making obscene payments on for an obscene amount of time, and will be able to put fuel in it when I want to go somewhere with my family. there are lots and lots of motorhomes for sale by people that owe much more on them than they are worth. It's a sad deal, but I have gotten to meet a lot of really nice folks in my shopping!

RE: Cummins "WARNING" - SOLVED (I think)

Since when is an ISB an underpowered coach?

RE: 1999 Winnie (Itasca) Suncruiser - Opinions?

So here's the real kicker question - is there any better coach out there for the $40-45K price range than this one?

RE: 1999 Winnie (Itasca) Suncruiser - Opinions?

Anybody else have one of these puppies care to give their opinions? I have been looking at several of these, and I've found 4 of the Winnebago's that I can get for the $40-45K range. One of them has a diesel generator, all the rest have LP generators. I've read a little about the "53" block that has a tendency to crack...? Does having the 19.5" tires vs. the 22.5" really make a big deal on a coach like this one? From one of the guys I talked to he said the engine turns about 2200RPM's at 65MPH, so I know this is higher RPM's than the 6-speed coaches, but from most people I've heard this coach will get anywhere from 8-11mpg. I guess it depends on the speed I travel? So here's the real kicker question - is there any better coach out there for the $40-45K price range than this one? Here's what I like: - diesel - under 35' with a huge slide, so it will fit into state parks easily - bathtub for the kids - 80" queen bed (not the 74 or 75") Here's what I don't like: - lack of raised rail chassis - 4-speed vs. 6-speed - "older" looking coach style (vs. many of the 2000 models) Thanks!!

RE: Hi All

Well - I have a popup camper now - and I really enjoy it, but with the two young boys - and we want to travel some - go see the USA... it's the best way to travel. What I've heard is that when boondocking - you need to be conservative with all your "resources" that being water, battery life and fuel. If you plan to use your massive computer system out in the boonies - then you'd need mega batteries with solar panels on the roof, or run the diesel generator... So you have 5 monitors? Gee I only have 2 24" monitors, but I'm not a stock/option guy. Maybe I should throw a few buxs at you and have you make me a few more, then I'd go and buy a $300K coach myself! Bring yourself a nice laptop and get a docking station to hook up extra monitors. Maybe you should get a coach with a BID LCD tv that you can use as a monitor, or maybe a video projector and screen - I've seen it done before... I'd be happy to chat more - if you'd like to send me a PM with your contact info.

RE: Hi All

If you have the cash to buy a nice rig, then I'd hope you have the cash to pay for fuel. It's a much smaller expense than the rig... I think we will see the middle class families dropping out of going RV's in motorhomes as much as they used to with the inflation squeeze on fuel, food, etc. If you have the income, then you have to ask yourself - does it really matter? I plan to buy a motorhome soon, and I am looking for something to fit my family. I want to get something that's in the 34-36' range so I can fit easily into all the state parks, as well as I want a fuel efficient diesel rig. For me that means I'm looking for something with the Cummins ISB motor and my budget range is $40-50K. That will put me into a 1999-2001 age range diesel's, which I'm fine with. At that price there isn't much depreciation left...

RE: Forest River Georgetown Class A experience

No matter what motorhome you buy - it seems like there will always be some irritating things about it. I don't own one yet, but have been reading enough to see that they all need some TLC and "upgrades" to make them better to drive. For example - I have a 1994 Volvo station wagon - and most people are happy to drive it as is, but I needed to add IPD Sway bars to keep the thing from having so much body roll around the corners. Same type of thing with the motorhomes. I plan to put in aftermarket shocks and other things to make my MH handle it's best in all situations.

RE: Cleaning rust spots on chassis

What happens at year 21? Does the coach just go *POOF* and turn to a pile of iron oxide dust?

RE: Diesel Pushers with Bunk Beds?

I was looking at the Newmar's and the Ventana would do it, but is going to be in the mid $150K range from memory. It's got the ISBX Cummins engine which should provide you with good fuel economy, and it's got a raised rail chassis so you have lots of storage room in the basement. Just be very careful that you aren't grossly overweight, as that becomes a safety issue to say the least. I also wanted to share I've got 2 boys - one is 2.5 yrs old and the other is 12 weeks old and I want a diesel bunkhouse too, but we don't plan to full time in it, so using wisdom for my situation I'm looking at a nice diesel pusher in the $40-50K range, and there are a few out there. I'm going for one with a booth dinette and a sofa bed, that way we have more than enough sleeping positions for the boys. If you are full time then I can see the need for a bunkhouse setup. Good luck and keep us posted!

RE: 5.9 cummins VS 7.2 cat question

If you are looking for fuel economy from what I've read the 5.9L is the king. It's not the fastest up the hill, but it's got the longest legs between fuel stops... (given the same size fuel tank that is...)

RE: Cleaning diesel engine

I use Castrol "super clean" in the purple spray bottle. This stuff literally eats oil and cuts grease wonderfully. I'm one of the ones that uses a pressure washer on my engine to get it clean. there are a lot of people that are super "careful" about it, but the way I look at it - I'd much rather maintain a clean motor and be able to see if something is leaking, etc. Just be careful to not inhale while you are spraying the super clean - as it's super caustic for your lungs. It works a lot better than Simple Green for cutting thru the oil/grease.

Whew! Good to hear you went to sleep, and I hope it was in a comfortable bed, not behind the wheel of a MH. Cheers!
